CHARACTER NAME: Real name: n/a
"Hero" name: Hyena
SERIES: Gargoyles
CHRONOLOGY: Just after the end of "Upgrade", before her next appearance in "Grief".
CLASS: Villain, moonlighting psychopath

BACKGROUND:
Not much is known of Hyena's background before she joined the Pack (beyond the citationless fact that she's Canadian, thanks much to the Gargoyles Wikia), but after the fact, her role was a rather straightforward one. With a decent history in martial arts, she and her brother — close enough in appearance to be fraternal twins, although he refers to her as his little sister — were invited to join the Pack, a group of fighters who would be primed for their own TV show. The show is a success, the fans are raving, the money is rolling in — and the Pack is bored.

Cue Xanatos, the shadowy man who pulled the strings behind the TV stations and talent scouts, who sends the Pack a mysterious package: a collection of photographs. They feature the snarling face of Goliath as he fights off unseen opponents; Goliath, leader of the Scottish clan of Gargoyles in New York, whom the tabloids know just as "the creature that stalks Manhattan at night". Naturally, the Pack is intrigued. They're paid to fake-fight "the evil ninjas" on their TV show, but their skills and training are very real. They'd love to test them against a real challenge, against a monster. The Pack is intrigued, but it takes just one more subtle push from Xanatos to really make the sparks fly between the Pack and those creatures that stalk Manhattan. From his temporary home in the prison (a living situation due entirely to the efforts of the gargoyles), Xanatos arranges for the televisions in the gargoyles' current roost to show nothing but the Pack on TV, all day, every day. Naturally the gargoyles are interested in these heroes that they see fighting off evil, and the youngest three are particularly captivated. Lexington is most intrigued of all, and after the three of them sneak into the rafters to see the Pack live in Madison Square, Lexington stays after the show to see if he can sneak in to meet the Pack.

He gets his chance, and the forewarned Pack is a little disappointed to finally meet one of those fabled gargoyles… only to have it be the smallest of them. But their quick-thinking leader, Fox, convinces Lexington to bring Goliath to meet them as well. Lexington happily agrees, and with both sides of the chessboard pushed properly into place, the Pack sets up an ambush for their new gargoyle friends.

The fight doesn't go well for Fox, Dingo, Wolf, Jackal, and Hyena. Goliath and Lexington, after a few setbacks, are able to overcome and escape the Pack, and Fox and Wolf even end up arrested. Hyena and Jackal remain free, although their show is history. A few months later they're hired by Fox, still in prison, to steal the Coyote Diamond — only to have Xanatos buy it out from under their noises before they can make their move. Hyena is furious and ready to start a fight in the middle of the fancy dress party they'd infiltrated, but her ever cool-headed brother holds her back for a more tactical strike. Once again the pawns on Xanatos's chessboard (but this time through Fox, who has fallen in with him), they're used this time to prove the loyalty of Xanatos's new bodyguard. Their attacks are foiled by Xanatos's bodyguard and the gargoyles both, and Hyena and Jackal are finally jailed for themselves.

They spend a good long while in Riker's Island prison, before a mysterious masked man in a suit of mechanical armor busts them out. This is, naturally, yet another of Xanatos's schemes. Hyena takes an immediate liking to the unknown man in armor, and happily goes along with him — although Fox declines her chance to escape, preferring to stay and "serve out her time." This was the main objective of the breakout, and Fox is shortly after released on early parole for exemplary behavior, just as she and Xanatos had intended. But in the present day of their escape, once the escaped Pack (sans Fox) are aboard Coyote's airship, Hyena immediately sides with him as leader. He's revealed to be (apparently) Xanatos, which Hyena finds startling, but not off-putting. The group decide to take vengeance on the gargoyles, who had put them in prison in the first place, and capture the gargoyles Lexington, Brooklyn, and Bronx. In the ensuing cast-wide fight, Coyote-Xanatos is proven to be a robotic duplicate of the man — which Hyena finds even more appealing. The Pack is once again defeated, but this time they escape into the night rather than send anyone to jail.

The third time the Pack appears, they've resorted to robbing banks for money. The gargoyles fend them off, and as they're lying around and moping about how unfair that is, the remains of Coyote (mostly destroyed in the last fight), arrives to ask them if they've ever considered an upgrade. With Xanatos's funds backing them, who once again intends to use the lost of them as pawns in his struggle against the gargoyles, they accept. Ever-ferocious Wolf gets genetic implants to make him more animal than human. More reasonable Dingo gets himself a suit of mechanical armor. Hyena and Jackal take the cybernetic route, getting technological implants, and Coyote himself gets a bigger, stronger robotic body (to which Hyena is even more attracted, naturally). They again go up against the gargoyles, but this time give them much more of a fight. It's just a last-minute strategy that allows the gargoyles to win this round, and once again Hyena and the others are taken to jail. It's from here that she'll be taken.

PERSONALITY:
Hyena is never seen anywhere without her brother, and the two compliment each other nicely. Her brother, Jackal, is the calm, calculating one of the two of them. While she is all for barreling into a fight, he'd rather stand back and find his enemy's weakness, preferably so he doesn't have to risk anything himself at all. Hyena is usually willing to go along with that, but there are times when she won't listen to anyone, even him. In Her Brother's Keeper, Jackal and Hyena's plans have started to go downhill, and Jackal still wants to play it low and sneak their way out of it. After being told to "contain her bloodlust," Hyena insists that she doesn't take orders from anybody, "Not even you, brother," and charges in to make it a fight anyway.

But while "hotheaded" is a huge part of her character, there are a few other facets. For example, mischievousness. Hyena is almost always laughing, whether it's mean spirited (and there is an awful lot of that), or simply amused. She can find something funny in any situation, and she's rarely without a grin. Unless, of course, things stop going her way. Hyena can be quite the sore loser, more than willing to resort to violence to get the odds in her favor again, as when Xanatos buys the diamond that she and Jackal are about to steal. She's also a huge fan of unfair advantages, as seen in her perfect willingness to trade out her body for mechanical upgrades.

As one might expect from someone so eager to jump into a fray, Hyena is easily bored. While she's not the type to be bored unless she's fighting, like one of their teammates (who often finds mockery from Hyena) is, she does need some kind of amusement. Whether it's making fun of those around her, training, or just playing poker, Hyena needs some kind of stimulation at all times. Sometimes that stimulation comes in the form of hitting on robots. (Or any suave man of power, really! It just happens to be extra attractive to her if he comes with robotic parts.) It doesn't much matter to her that Jackal has expressed distaste at this particular hobby of hers. Hyena is very fond of the robotic member of their team, Coyote. She takes his side in most disputes, sometimes even hanging off of his arm, and prompting Jackal to comment that "that's sicker than usual". It could be argued that Hyena really doesn't have much pride, in this matter and in others. She can be defensive, but isn't overly invested in it. More than once she's shrugged off accusations of sinking to new lows with "Hey, it's a living."

And finally, despite her impulsiveness, hotheadedness, and short attention span, Hyena is effective. Especially with their upgrades, she and Jackal are a truly formidable team, capable of holding even the gargoyles at bay. They're competent and (generally) successful mercenaries, and only tend to get caught and thrown into jail when the gargoyles get involved.

POWER:
She has no canon powers (beyond being a cyborg, but no supernatural abilities), so I'll give her:
• Technopathy! The way she uses her implants is practically already a form of it, but this will allow her to eventually give herself repairs and even upgrades, along with the usual heightened hacking and such.
• The ability to know the monetary value of everything around her! Is that necklace worth stealing? Naw, it's just zircon, better go for the solid gold cane-topper on the old guy one over.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[ A voice cuts in mid-sentence, somewhere between drawled boredom and idle curiosity. ]

—didn't order any fancy phones.

[ A pause, and the speaker's obviously fiddling with her shiny new communicator. It switches from voice, to video (hello, sky!), to text (aaddjhkyiw), and back to voice again. ]

How do the laser guns in this thing activate? Come on, they've got to be here somewhere. What kind of stupid phone comes without laser guns? At least give me a power tool set, or something!

[ A little more fiddling, then the world's heaviest sigh. ]

Oh, great. Don't tell me this stupid thing's busted already.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
It felt good to be out of jail. Out of jail, and back in the Big Apple, even! She could just smell all the banks waiting to be broken into and robbed clean. Hyena stood on a street corner, arms folded over her chest, and not sure whether to be amused or offended by the fact that passers by weren't running fearfully from her. They glanced at her golden implanted armor curiously, but not even that warranted much staring. How quickly the crowd forgets a dangerous duo and their blazing wrist-mounted laser-guns! The thought of her last heist makes her chuckle — the look on that old woman's face when Hyena had snatched the pearl necklace right off her, hah!

But speaking of a dangerous duo, it's beginning to look like Jackal hadn't gotten dragged through that machine (or whatever it was — she didn't stick around long) with her. She'd been glad at first, glad that there wouldn't be anyone around to curb her bright and often violent ideas…

…But then she'd gotten a little lonely. She missed that pompous jerk when he wasn't around, which was almost never.

Hyena's patient amusement twists into annoyance, and she… well, picks a direction, striding forward on pointed metal heels. Standing around hasn't done much for her so far, and she's always been a lady of action. She'll find Jackal. Or someone who can bring her back to Jackal, or maybe someone who can bring Jackal here. And failing that… maybe she'll just bust a jewelry store. A solo act now and then never hurt anyone, right?

FINAL NOTES:
NOT THAT YOU CARE BUT HERE IS A LIST OF HER CYBERNETIC ABILITIES, MAYBE IT'S JUST FOR MYSELF NOW WHAT

-Laser guns, both built into her palms and mounted in her arms.
-Limbs can be extended from her body, changing in shape and length to run on all fours, crawl like a spider, or snap like a whip.
-Limbs can be torn off and will remain independently mobile and able to reattach.
-Fingers and the toes of her boots can be extended, both of them cutting edges
-Fingers can be shot out like throwing knives, and replaced by an extra set
-Hands can fold out and be replaced by all sorts of attachments, including a jackhammer, a spinning saw, and a flamethrower
-Bolts of electricity can be channeled through her fingers
-A jeckpack for flight folds out of her shoulder blades
-Enhanced digital hearing, with a removable ear piece
-Her entire body can fold into a metal ball, for rolling attacks (what the crap, Disney)
-And finally, a water-proof sealant complete with an expandable blowdryer. That's important after a hot tub dive so she doesn't rust.

It's all a little weird.
